It used to be the norm for fashion houses to have 2 releases a year: Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. These days that is much higher. Most fast fashion companies have monthly releases making it impossible to keep up - physically and financially. But who would want to? Fast fashion may be a great way to access trends cheaply but there are major costs associated with it to the environment and the people who make them.
At sassind, we launch two ranges a year, injecting smaller lines like shoes, accessories + restock twice a year. Creating collections that work in a mix and match style: for example, last years knit will always go with this seasons legging and this summers linen will work in with last summers linen. Why? Because we want every woman to build a wardrobe they love and the only way you can truly do that is slowly. A well thought out wardrobe should be a combination of classic, staple styles made from quality fabrics, versatile shapes that are made to last. Quality over quantity.
Slow Fashion considers the materials used, how the garment is made and who is making it, in order to be ethical without compromising on quality. Sassind's creators, Tamara and Craig, have visited the factories personally and have forged strong business relationships with their suppliers, they conduct quality control checks of the facilities up to 4 times a year, work solely with natural fibres and design garments to last season after season. This is something sassind is very proud of and refuses to compromise on.
An instantly actionable way to embrace slow fashion is to simplify your wardrobe. Shop smart and shop locally. Be aware of the environmental impact fast-fashion chains, step away from that quick fix happiness maker and start investing. Become aware of brands that align with an ethos you agree with, get to know your designers and makers and start thinking about small steps you can make to make our world a fairer, better place.
Invest in your wardrobe like it has to last you the next 20 years. This may mean you focus on a simple, classic palette - neutral shades that flatter your skin tone, styles that suit your shape and fabrications you love to wear. The luxury of slipping into cashmere can be enjoyed year after year if the item is cared for, so shop for quality items that won't be replaced on the rack by something brighter, sparklier and newer in a few hours time.
what sassind is doing to combat fast fashion
+ Working directly with small, ethical factories to ensure that the staff, as well as the products being made, are being made in an ethical environment
+ Creating pieces in fabrics that are natural, eg: cashmere, merino, linen + organic cotton
+ Releasing two ranges per year, making each collection mix + match to enhance your existing pieces
+ Offering a complimentary styling service to help you create your own capsule wardrobe, inturn educating our customers on the benefits of quality over quantity
+ Always striving to stay as fair to our customers as possible by not offering random discounts, sales + a week later more sales. A designer shirt can be marked up 8x and this mark up always includes a significant margin for discounting. We do not include this in our calculations so you get our best price, all year round.
