The story of the sassind guesthouse

The story of the sassind guesthouse

August 18, 2019

My parents bought this property (Tanderra) in 2001 after moving over from the North West Coast of Tasmania. Always enthusiastic gardeners and looking for new projects, they were excited to tackle such a historically significant garden and return it to its former glory and renovate and extend the beautiful 1930's cottage. Tanderra holds many happy memories for my young family and me.  Mum and Dad lived at this property while we lived abroad, so when we would visit, we would often spend from 4-6 weeks staying with them and enjoying the grounds and the homesteads warm embrace. This is where both of my girls learnt how to climb trees, get comfortable with getting wet and muddy, and running through sprinklers in the summer heat.

In 2014 they moved onto a new project further down the mountain, and Tanderra was rented out to long term tenants. When the last tenant neglected both the house and the garden, we went to work on a full renovation of the homestead.

It was during this time that Craig (my husband and former 5* hotelier), came up with the idea of converting the property into a luxury guest house. I have worked with an interior stylist for the last five months selecting pieces which reflect the same underlying ethos of sassind clothing: quality + comfortable + classic style.

It has been a family affair, with my Dad completing all of the painting both inside and out (his first apprenticeship was as a house painter). Mum working with her gardening team to bring the gardens up to scratch, Craig working on the more aesthetic aspects of the overall guest experience, and my girls spending many weekends up there with us rediscovering how to climb trees.

Our 2021 Merino shipment was developed, finalized, and ordered in February last year, due for delivery at the end of May 2020. We all know what happened next. By April last year our factory in Punjab, India was in lockdown, and when their workers were able to return to work we were well and truly into Winter and it was not feasible to commence production. To say that we are excited by our latest arrivals is an understatement. This is our first winter drop in 2 years.
